The uncomfortable fact is that the prosperity of the modern state of Arizona has been built by the sweat of those who are pulled up here from across the border by the economic force that transcends all politics to shoulder the low-status jobs we quietly offer them, even while loudly professing love of law and country. This is the invisible Arizona hypocrisy — a wink and a nod that has ensured that the pools get cleaned, the hotel sheets are crisply laundered, the golf courses are mowed, the strawberries are picked, and the roof beams are nailed tight.
